Nike Baseball :60 from Michael Folino on Vimeo.
This commercial was strictly a labor of love. There was no creative brief for this spot. We knew it was the 50th Anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier and thought it should be celebrated. Remarkably we took this spot to Nike and read it to them. To their credit, by the time I finished reading the last word, they said, "Go make it." In two weeks, we'd filmed 26 baseball legends and it was on the air.
It's not often you can do an ad for one of your heroes. But to also get to shag baseballs off Tony Gwynn. To have Ernie Banks say, "Lets play two today." To shake hands with Dodgers legend Vin Scully, whose voice I listened to on a transistor radio under my pillow at nights as he called Dodger games. To shake hands with Buck O'Neil, a man who could never got to play, yet had not an ounce of bitterness in him...Like Lou Gehrig, I am truly a lucky man.
